Join us at one of the largest agricultural events of the year!
It’s that time of the year again! The Florida State Fair opens February 8, 2018 and runs through February 19, 2018. The fair is filled with fried treats, student exhibits and the largest midway in North America. However, the fair is one of the largest agricultural events of the year.
Annually, more than 5,000 animals travel through the fairgrounds and over 20 livestock contests are available for youth competitors from all over the state. From swine to lambs, the livestock shows are an excellent demonstration of hard work completed by the exhibitors. If you prefer hands-on experience, visit the “Salute to Ag Exhibit!” There are a variety of farm animals, and fair attendees can bottle feed calves, hold chicks or witness calves being born.
If the weather gets warm, take a break and browse the agricultural showcase building. Inside you’ll find the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame Showcase and the Florida Cattle Ranching exhibit. The Florida Ag Hall of Fame Showcase presents Florida’s wide variety of agriculture commodities; strawberries, citrus, bees, poultry, beef cattle, and watermelons. The Cattle Ranching Exhibit showcases one of the oldest and largest industries in the nation. Inside, experience centuries of ranching traditions through personal stories, photographs, art and historical artifacts.
This year’s fair is the place to be for unique ways to learn about agriculture. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will host the “Florida Farm to School Arcade” where students will learn about Florida agricultural products through a fun and interactive game. Florida Farm Bureau will present “Ag-Venture,” a hands-on learning experience designed to teach students about the importance of agriculture and to help them understand and appreciate where their food comes from. Finally, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, Inc. provided a working garden to educate about sustainable gardening and create a network for people engaged in local food sources.
The Florida State Fair is home to several prestigious agricultural events. Throughout the week agricultural affiliates will attend the Fresh from Florida Breakfast, The Woman of The Year in Agriculture luncheon, the Governors Day luncheon and the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame Banquet, where men and women who have made lasting contributions to agriculture will be honored.
We are thankful to have a state fair that showcases Florida Agriculture to its diverse attendees. As newer generations are removed from production agriculture, the state fair becomes more important.
